"Lightning" Strikes At Cayuga County Speedway! |
|
Weedsport, NY – September 5, 2010 by Tom Skibinski, photo by Jay Fish Cayuga County Fair Speedway has been the centerpiece for historic happenings over four decades, remaining a DIRTcar Northeast charter member facility since its inception in 1976. The storied 3/8-miler was again the site of a record-setting performance on Sunday as 17 year-old sensation Larry Wight overtook open-wheel veteran Alan Johnson, then staved off every challenge from DIRTcar’s all-time winningest Big-Block Modified driver to claim victory in the Super DIRTcar Series ‘Labor Day 100’ presented by Owasco Beverage. “Never thought I get a tour win this early so it feels real good right now,” said a quiet yet confident Wight, just beginning his senior year at John C. Birdlebough High School in his hometown of Phoenix, N.Y. “I ran it 100% the whole race and every time I saw lapped traffic just prayed for a caution as I didn’t want to give up my line.” “We’ve been chasing cars left and right all year, switching cars a lot. Finally got this car this week and haven’t been out of the Top-10 yet. And now we finally got a win,” beamed Wight, following his first Top-5 feature finish in 15 tour races this season. Pole-sitter Johnson settled for second after Wight stormed by for good on lap seven, with hard-charging Dale Planck, defending race winner Billy Decker and Justin Haers filling the front five slots in the annual Labor Day classic. The fourth and final Series show of the season at Cayuga County attracted 34 race teams, paced by tour point leaders Matt Sheppard and Jimmy Phelps, who also topped the tracks standings heading into the Weedsport Big-Block finale. Haers was quickest ahead of Johnson in Bilstein Shocks Time Trials while Wight was only a tad off the single-lap clockings posted by Phelps (4th) and Sheppard (6th) in their preliminary runs. |
