Pierre Dagenais and Clement Therrien were on the top line for the BOB FM-730 Truckstop 100. Dagenais took the top spot with Danny O’Brien jumping to second when Sébastien Gougeon got off the track in turn 3 and the yellow was out on the first lap. Danny O’Brien has a strong restart and claimed the lead with Stéphane Lafrance in third. Clement Therrien charged back and took third on the fourth lap. Therrien was really strong using the outside lane and worked his way into second over Dagenais and chased O’Brien for the lead. Therrien grabbe d the lead in the backstretch on lap 8. The leaders got into slower cars on lap 15.. Jason Riddell brought the caution as he stopped at the same place as Gougeon. Therrien and O’Brien battled for the lead but Therrien had the edge with David Hébert running strong in third. A few cars got together in the second corner and the yellow flag was back out on lap 21. O’Brien reclaimed the lead on a restart with Therrien close to him. Young Matt Billings was now in the top 5 with 25 laps in the books. By Tom Skibinski, photo by Jeremiah FIsh West Lebanon, NY – August 26, 2010 – Home track advantage paid big dividends ---$17,500 to be exact--- as J.R. Heffner led a sweep of the top-three finishing positions Thursday night in capturing his second career Super DIRTcar Series Mr. DIRT Track, USA victory at Lebanon Valley Speedway. Heffner already knows where some of the earnings may go as the Pittsfield, Mass. pilot posed in victory lane beside a disabled A. Colarusso & Son no. 74 Goodermote Excavation/Bicknell ride after losing both the rear-end and engine in his final dash to the checkers. “The good part was that the track was slowing down the last 20 laps,” remarked Heffner, 38, after he billowed smoke over the final two circuits yet still had enough power to outlast weekly rivals Andy Bachetti and Wayne Jelley, while Series point-chasers Michael Storms and Jimmy Phelps filled out the front-five. “I just said ‘Please, not now.’” “The water temperature (gauge) was going all the way around as it was just getting hotter and hotter Must have got some mud clogging up the radiator. It was definitely better to be lucky than good tonight but this Bicknell car was just fantastic,” beamed Heffner, following his third Super DIRTcar Series win --- all at Lebanon Valley. Track regulars Mark Flach Jr., Ray Hoard and Keith Flach were scored next while tour stars Danny Johnson and Billy Dunn rounded out the top-10 as the last to complete the entire 100-lap distance. The door opened at the drop of the first green flag for eighth-place starter Heffner as last year’s Lebanon Valley Series race winners Billy Decker and Matt Sheppard made contact on the front straightaway leaving Decker’s Gypsum teammate Larry Wight with no room to maneuver. Decker was reported to have a broken battery cable which set off the chain-reaction that also sidelined Wight, who had locked bumpers with Sheppard, although ‘Super Matt’ picked up at the rear of the 31-car field after a short pit stop. Decker’s front row partner Jelley inherited the point and outran second-generation chauffeur Kyle Sheldon on the complete restart, followed closely by Hoard, a two-time Valley winner in 2010, Heffner and Brett Hearn. Heffner needed only a handful of circuits to charge into the runner-up slot and just four more times around the smooth 5/8-miler to track down Jelley and forge the final lead change lap nine. |

By Frank Catizone Photo by Bob Ambruster MIDDLETOWN, NY. – John Lieto enjoyed a very successful career racing different forms of sprint cars at tracks throughout the Northeast. Lieto, who began driving micro-sprints in New Hampshire 19 years ago, collected 113 victories in different types of winged racers – including several while competing in the mini-sprint division at Accord Speedway. But Lieto has been winless since switching to bigger cars at the Orange County Fair Speedway in 2007. The 44-year-old Mt. Kisco driver joined f orces with car owner Ken Hermance at the fabled racing facility, but he’s found the going tough. That is up until last Saturday night. Lieto, after starting on the outside pole, survived a frightening 19-car pile-up on the homestretch and the challenges provided by Tim Hindley to score his first career OCFS victory in the Modified 30-lap feature. “It’s been a long time,’’ said Lieto, referring to his winless drought. “But it’s really tough winning at this race track. The competition here is very good. “But I can’t thank Ken Hermance enough for sticking behind me. I wouldn’t be here right now if it weren’t for him. Also, Pete Mencarini has been with me since I started racing 19 years ago and I couldn’t have done this without all of his help.’’ Lieto was also very fortunate to start on the front row as trouble was about to happen behind him shortly after taking the initial green flag. All the trouble, according to track officials, began in the second row when Billy VanInwegen got out of shape and Joe Morel lost a tire. Morel’s car began flipping down the homestretch and the chain-reaction began as 19 cars were involved. |
